Japan Factory Power Outages
On Wednesday, July 6, lightning struck a power line for Renesas Group’s factory in Kawashiri, Japan, resulting in immediate suspension of 90% of production equipment, due to an instantaneous voltage drop. While Renesas has implemented safeguards to protect their factories against instantaneous voltage drops, this occurrence lasted longer than any prior instances and longer than any estimation the company has made. The factory returned to full production capacity by Monday, July 11. While there is damage, the group initially estimated that two weeks’ worth of production would be lost; however, after returning to full function and assessing the situation further, the company announced that only one week’s worth of production would be lost.
Micron also experienced a power outage on Friday, July 8, in their Hiroshima plant. However, this outage only lasted around five to ten minutes, minimizing the impact on the company’s production capacity, and nearly removing any danger of impact on the supply and demand in the DRAM market.
